Starting in 1939, plates got smaller, and started using 2 different numbering configurations:
A/A 000 and A/A 00A
The letters on the left side are still a county code.

This year, tabs were used to conserve
metal for the war effort.

In 1951, some plates were issued in the "long" format and numbered A/A 0000.
1952
New plates were issued with slots for re-validation tabs.
These plates were used until 1956.
The numbering sequence went from A/A 000  to  A/A 00A  to  A/A 0A0  to  A/A A00.

     
The long format was also used in 1952.


Tabs were issued for the next 4 years.

The standard 6 X 12 size was adopted, and the A/A 0000 numbering became standard.
These plates were used until 1959, when an entire replate took place.

These plates were never dated, as they were validated with windshield stickers.
